Guimaraes Embroidery— also known as Portuguese Whitework— originated in Guimaraes (Portugal) and is first documented in the 19th Century. This type of embroidery was used on early clothing worn by the people of Guimaraes and was stitched onto fine and course type linen. It was also often used on trousseaux items of young ladies of marriageable age as well as nobility. The term ‘bordado rico’ - rich embroidery - is often used to describe it which differentiates it from ‘popular embroidery’.
This embroidery was usually done in either Blue, Grey, Red, White, Beige or Black—the colours never mixed.
Guimaraes Embroidery was done by hand, but, using your embroidery machine you can now create any length of edgings to use on linen, towels and for trousseaux items. Corners have been included for all your project needs!
